THE MUSICAL OF MUSICALS RETURNS!

Peoria Cabaret Theatre is thrilled to present the return engagement of our 2010 smash hit The Musical of Musicals (The Musical!)  for ONE WEEKEND ONLY, March 8^th and 9th.  The original cast is back featuring Barb Couri, Jarod Hazzard, Katie McLuckie, Mike Reams and Tony Roberts on the piano!

THE SHOW: The Musical of Musicals (The Musical!) is a musical about … musicals! In this comic satire of musical theatre genres, the same story is told five different ways – each in the distinctive style of a different master of the form…Rodgers and Hammerstein (Oklahoma, South Pacific), Stephen Sondheim (Company, Sweeney Todd), Jerry Herman (Hello Dolly, Mame), Andrew Lloyd Webber (Phantom of the Opera, Evita), & Kander and Ebb (Chicago, Cabaret). “It’s Saturday Night Live meets Glee!” There is truly something in this show for EVERYONE!

If you’re looking for a decent meal and sheer hilarity, you could do worse than “The Musical of Musicals: The Musical!” It’s running Downtown at the Waterhouse.

First staged in 2005 at New York’s Dodger Stages, “The Musical of Musicals” is the parody to end all parodies of that 20th century American art form that now – thanks to Andrew Lloyd Webber – has come to acquire a distinctively British accent.

A horribly hackneyed storyline about a heroine who can’t pay the rent to an evil landlord but who is eventually rescued by a handsome hero receives five different satirical spins: in the styles of Rodgers and Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim, Jerry Herman, Webber, and Kander and Ebb.

Theater insiders especially will enjoy “The Musical of Musicals.” There are allusions to “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” “Into the Woods,” “Hello, Dolly!” “Evita,” “Joseph and the Amazing Technnicolor Dreamcoat,” “Oklahoma!” and more. You don’t have to be a musical-theater know-it-all, however, to enjoy this piece.

Directed by Andrew Driscoll with assistance from Ed Peck, the whole thing is so lively and silly and light-hearted it’s sure to hold your attention. As much celebration as send-up, it also might tempt you to revisit all of those old chestnuts at a local community theater near you.

“The Musical of Musicals” Opens This Friday!

Peoria Cabaret Theatre is proud to present the Central Illinois premiere of The Musical of Musicals (The Musical!) March 5-6, and 12-13.   The cast includes local favorites Barb Couri, Jarod Hazzard, Katie McLuckie and Mike Reams.

THE SHOW: June, an ingénue who can’t pay the rent, is threatened by her evil landlord. Will the handsome leading man come to her rescue? In an evening of variations on a theme, this basic plot is musicalized the way Rodgers and Hammerstein might have envisioned it, taking place in Kansas in August, complete with a Dream Ballet. The story is then done in the style of Stephen Sondheim, featuring the landlord as a tortured, artistic genius who slashes the throats of his tenants in revenge because they don’t appreciate his art. When presented in the style of Jerry Herman, the story becomes a splashy star vehicle, while the Andrew Lloyd Webber version is a rock musical, with borrowed themes from Puccini. The story is re-told one last time in the style of Kander and Ebb set in a speakeasy in Chicago.  “It’s Saturday Night Live meets Glee!”   There truly is something for everyone in this show!  

Admission is $35 per person for dinner, show, tax and gratuity. The menu for this show features Kahlua pulled pork, The Waterhouse chicken (boneless breast of chicken served in a creamy white wine sauce with mushrooms), pasta primavera, tossed mixed greens salad, smashed potatoes, glazed baby carrots, buttered corn, and dessert.
